Extremely Accurate and Simple to use. Pricey – but…
Before I actually begin, one thing should be perfectly clear – you’re looking at this radar because you understand accuracy is not only important, it is critical when looking for a radar detector. If you look at my other reviews, you’ll notice that I’ve given 5 stars to those products as well – you’ll also notice I haven’t done many reviews in the past, that’s because I only really write reviews for items that I think deserve it. As for the rest, well, I don’t keep the product if it doesn’t meet the 5 star requirement! So trust me when I say this radar is the best you can buy under $500.
Accuracy:
I’ve always been a little skeptical about using radar detectors, everyone knows they won’t prevent tickets every single time. But, if it can save you a couple tickets it’s already paid for itself. I live in Chicago, and frequently drive to neighboring states for work and to visit family. Because of this, I knew that I would have to buy a solid detector that was effective if I was constantly on the road. I made the right choice. Driving on the expressways in the midwest is simple for me now knowing I am using the 8500 x50. It has alerted me much in advance if a cop was gunning and I’ve always had time to slow down and pass the cop at the posted speed limit. The three main alerts, K, KA, and X are pretty much always on target – and with minimal false readings, it stays quiet when it needs to.
Ease of Use:
One of the best aspects of this radar is how easy it is to use. Right out of the package, it’s ready to go. However, if you’re a little more technical and always need things a certain way, you can configure it with a number of different settings to fit your style. One of the downfalls is that I wish the x50 would have a better volume control – I feel that it doesn’t go loud enough, especially when I’m listening to music in my car. To make up for it, I’ve moved the x50 from the center of the winshield to more to the left, so it is in my field of vision while I drive to allow me to see the display at all times out of the corner of my eye. In addition, the Escort SmartCord works well with it’s auto mute button on the adaptor itself.
Value:
Hands down, the x50 takes the gold as the number one radar on the market. You’re probably thinking to yourself, $340 for a radar detector is a lot of money. And you know.. you’re absolutely right. But.. if you save yourself two speeding tickets, the x50 has paid for itself (not to mention the pain of having to go to court and traffic school). If this radar was over $400, it would still be worth it considering what you may be saving yourself from. I got the x50 with the blue display because it was from the Sharper Image, and that’s all they had. If you want to save yourself $40 by going with the red display, I say do it and save some cash.
The Bottom Line:
If you want to make a solid investment, get the 8500 x50 and don’t waste your money with a $100 or $200 radar that isn’t accurate – doing that will cost you the price of your ticket plus a radar detector that would be better off being used for a paper weight. Although Bel and the Valentine One are solid detectors, they don’t match up to the stats that the x50 has – see it for yourself at www.radartest.com.
Beware!
I ordered the Passport X50 from Amazon to save the $18 shipping Escort Radar was charging. I was told by someone at Escort Radar that Amazon was an authorized reseller.
After having my detector on for ten minutes (right out of the box), it did three “SELF CAL”s, then said “SERVICE REQUIRED”. I called Escort Radar and was told “If you let the car power up the unit when you start the car, the voltage can be all over the place and the unit gets confused. You must first start the car, and then use the thumbwheel to turn on the detector.” It makes some sense, but if this is really the case, why don’t they put those instructions in their manual? After trying this many times, the unit was “still confused”, so I returned it for a replacement.
My second detector worked for maybe thirty minutes before the same thing happened. This time Escort Radar told me “if you leave it plugged into the cigarette lighter over night, this has been found to cause problems.” Well my lighter power goes off when I turn off the ignition, so this doesn’t apply. Escort Radar also told me that “excessive heat” has been causing them problems. Now we have had a few days of 100° heat, and I’m sure the car gets hotter parked in the sun, but the design engineers should have accounted for these conditions plus some margin when you design something that is supposed to work in a car. It gets a lot hotter in other parts of the country. There are no warnings in the manual about not using it above 90° or leaving it off in a hot car. You wouldn’t design a ski that doesn’t work below 35°, would you???
The most troubling part of my conversation with Escort Radar service department was they told me Amazon is not an authorized reseller, and they have no idea where they are getting the units from. Furthermore, they will not honor any warranty nor will they ever repair the unit, not even for money.
The good, the bad and the noisy
After driving for ~2 weeks with both x50 and Valentine One I am
keeping x50 and Val1 will go back to the vendor.
Besides the price differential, x50 offers better pop protection,
is less sensitive in the city driving and offers more up-to-date
interface.
On the other hand it lacks arrows and back window radar (it does
have a back window laser detector, which is not the same as a
full fledged radar that Valentine 1 has patented).
Arrows could come very handy, but this alone does not
justify the ~$120 difference between otherwise very similar
products.
Other than that, both units are very accurate compared to some
other detectors that I’ve tried. The noise level in the city
driving could get excessive, thankfully x50 comes with a very convinient mute button right on their “smart cord” power supply.
I am deducting a star for the lack of a carrying case,
as less expensive units come with carrying cases out of the box
I was expecting x50 to provide this accessory as part of the
product, not a separate purchase.

Quality at Affordable Expense
Great pictures and easy to use. I researched and played with tons of cameras before finally deciding on the Nikon S200. The choice was that it carried similar features of high-end/high-expense cameras on the market. It was only natural to choose this camera as it gave me great quality at a poor man’s budget. And if something ever happens to it such as getting lost or stolen while on trips, it won’t put me in the hole. I also have early Parkinson’s disease. It has a stabilizing feature that allows me to take the pictures despite my shaking. Believe me, it is a nice feeling to be able to take a picture and not have it blurred or smeared. Other cameras on the market didn’t help with this and left me overwhelmed and frustrated. With the Nikon S200, I had renewed confidence in taking quality pictures.
Nice size and display but disappointed with the image quality
I bought one from Costco and already returned it after one week. 50% of the pictures taken outdoor were blurred, maybe from handshake. The VR is probably not effective per Hiram’s review. Otherwise, it is pretty nice and solid camera. The video quality is pretty good. Interface is good. I just found out another colleague had bought one too and he is complaining about the blurred image issue. I am now considering the Nikon S50.
Better than expected!
This is my second digital camera and I’m so happy to have it! I looked at a few others, but the size, picture quality and LCD screen are phenomonal! Keep in mind there is no viewer on this camera, but with the quality of the screen, you don’t need one. Definitely recommend this camera to someone who is interested in having memories but not using professionally.

A Good Performer especially in this zoom range
I acquired this lens to provide me with an ultra-wide zoom for landscapes and indoors uses. I do not routinely shoot in this focal length range, so I was hesitant about spending so much on the Canon 10-22mm, although the Canon 10-22mm is by all accounts, fantastic. I have had very positive experiences with Tamron in the past, and decided to give this lens a try over the Sigma equivalent. Cosmetically, the lens is very lightweight but feels solid in the hands, and the zoom ring takes some getting used to as it rotates in the opposite direction as Canon brand lenses. The finish on the lens is very nice and the included lens hood fits nicely, but provides only minimal protection to the front element. This is understandable since this lens is an ultra-wide zoom, and larger lens hoods would cause vignetting and shadowing problems. The lens hood does a nice job of protecting from lens flare issues. The lens extends only a small amount when zooming. Performance wise, the lens is quite soft wide open, which is somewhat disappointing but not a major issue for my own uses. It is something to be acutely aware of nonetheless. However, stopped down to f/8 or narrower fixes this problem, and at f/8 and narrower, the lens is very sharp with very nice color contrast and saturation. Sharpness falls off again at f/16 due to diffraction, but between f/8 and f/16, the lens is excellent. CA is nicely controlled as is barrel distortion, both of which are common big problems for many lenses in this focal range. I was pleasantly surprised with this lens’s control of CA as I was expecting it to be much worse than it is. I borrowed a friend’s Tamron 11-18mm lens, and my 10-24 was VASTLY superior with regards to problems with CA and barrel distortion and adds a complete stop of speed. The upgrades that Tamron has made with this lens are very noticeable and worth the extra cost over the previous generation Tamron ultra-wide zoom lens. The autofocusing is very quiet, accurate, and fast. Overall, this is a very nice alternative to the vastly more expensive camera-branded lenses like the Canon 10-22mm or the extremely expensive Nikon super-wide angle lenses and provides very good quality in this zoom range.
UPDATE: Recently, this lens took a serious tumble from about 3 feet off the ground onto a hard tile floor. The only damage was a ding on the lens cap! I’m impressed.
Quality build, more distortion than expected
Using this lens with a 40D, I was underwhelmed with the results and will return it and try with the Sigma. The build quality and feel of the lens was very good. I use the excellent Tamron 18-270 so the company has satisfied me in the past.
As with any wide angle lens, the principal concern is going to be distortion and my expectations were realistic. Some barreling is normal. What surprised me is how often the aberrations crept out of the corners to the heart of the images. Not always, mind you. The problem is most severe when you’ve got the lens wide open — but then isn’t that part of the point of this lens? Also you do get different results depending on stop but i didn’t find a consistent solution. Moreover, I’d rather not have to factor that in for every shot.
A couple of other points. Focusing was really good in the center of the image but pretty soft at the corners. Again, there was variation. Color representation was good and consistent.
This lens may turn out to be better than the competitors and I may end up having to re-purchase it but first I’ll check out the Sigma and, if necessary, the Canon.
Tamron AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 for Canon. Biggest bang for the buck
As a professional photographer since 1969, I’ve worn out more equipment than I care to admit. Carrying Nikon, Canon and Maymiya cameras all over the world sometimes becomes a burden. I decided to give this lens a try after reading the specs on Tamron’s website. I use a Canon 50D for my daily point & shoot. It’s light and with a vertical grip fits my hand better than my D700. I’m just beginning to use the Tokina. On the surface it appears well made (6 year warranty.) It focuses quickly albeit a little noisy compared to Canon 10-22. The range of the lense (10-24mm) is an asset to a non-full frame sensor camera. Team this lens up with 28-135mm & 75-300 zooms and you have a bag that you can actually carry for most circumstances encountered. So far so good. Next thing to do is run it through my battery of tests. I’ll update this review as soon as tests are done. Initial perspective. Good focal length range, appears shape with low vignetting. Very low distortion with no fisheye effect. Small size. Great lense cap.

Best Garmin Sounder
This sounder is great – fairly easy to install and works well in most situations. In the flats with a lot of grass it would sometimes give inaccurate readings or fail to determine depth, but mostly worked great and better than other transducers I used in the past.

Epson projector – excellent product
Pros: This projector is a very good choice for home entertainment as well as work in an office or in the lab [my case]. Native WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution in wide screen makes it useful for most laptops and desktop computers.
It is very bright even when operated in economy mode [3000 lumen]. The self adjusting feature is very good, like for instance the auto keystone. The menu is easy to navigate, and efficient. The lamp is good, and doesn’t heat up too much. The projector is quiet, and doesn’t get too hot while operating. The cover lid for the lamp is a good extra. The machine is very light and very easy to carry with the provided bag.
The projector, once turned off after use, does NOT require to wait for the fan to stop running.
Cons: The VGA cable is rather short but can be replaced with a 10ft super-VGA shielded video cable for about $20.
Other Thoughts: In essence, a must buy! Clear, bright and sharp images/videos at a fair price.
Epson Powerlite 1730W review
Straight out of the box, the images projected by this projector when connected to my Dell Precision M4300 laptop closely matched images on my well-calibrated, highly accurate Samsung Syncmaster XL20 monitor connected to my Dell Precision T5400 workstation. This is precisely what I hoped this projector would deliver. I did get a message that the projector was overheating after running it on high for about an hour, but the lower brightness setting was more than adequate even in a not-so-dark room. Overall, I’m quite satisfied with this projector, which is my first digital projector.
Presentation Projector
I was very satisfied with the projector, especially the small and light dimensions, the brightness and quality of the picture it puts out and how it has the instant power shut off. However, I would have wished the automatic hand control was equipped with a laser pointer.

Color and white light output1
With Epson projectors, your presentations are sure to shine bright. The Epson PowerLite 1730W delivers 3000 lumens, whether you’re projecting images with deep, dark colors or a white screen with minimal text or graphics. You get consistent light output, whatever you’re projecting. And, with Epson, you can be confident you’re getting exactly what you need because Epson measures white light output according to the ISO 21118 standard, a more rigid standard than the maximum or outdated ANSI lumens rating used by competitive products.
3LCD technology — for quality and color that’s beyond amazing
3LCD technology delivers amazing color and detail. Whether it’s big-screen entertainment or a classroom demonstration, 3LCD technology takes video performance to the next level. Delivering legendary image quality, this innovative technology always ensures powerful visual presentations.
- Color — 3LCD technology goes far beyond ordinary color. “Clear”, “rich” and “vibrant” barely begin to describe the incredible depth and brilliance it delivers. The impact is stunning. It’s an astonishing level of realism you never thought possible.
- Reliability — 3LCD technology is durable and dependable. Road-tested by millions of projector users around the world, it has been used in more projection products than any other. Over 50 million chips used in projectors and RPTV products have been put to the test in classrooms, sales presentations and on stage.
- Detail — 3LCD technology offers extraordinary detail. And detail is what superior image quality is all about — from movies to your most important presentations. 3LCD light engines deliver incredible, jaw-dropping detail — the kind that puts you right in the middle of where the action is.
